Dvandvadevata Suktas

In Rigveda, a comprehensive study of dual deities like Indra - Vayu, Ashvini Kumaras, Mitra-Varuna, and other deities who are associated with each other are mentioned with various examples. Their individual radiance and power is more enhanced when taken together: the whole is larger than the sum of its parts. This concept is explored by this online camp lecture series on the enhancement of dual deities' individual powers. Eg. Ashvinau are considered as Devabhishajau, the doctors of the deities. Many of their miracles are attributed to turning old to young, a broken thigh replaced with an iron thigh which we can relate with the modern technology of cosmetic surgery, knee replacement etc.

Course Content

The course on Dvandvadevata Suktas - Dual Divinities in the Rigveda comprises 7 sessions.

Rigveda 1.160 Dyāvā-Pṛthivī Sūktam
Dyavaprthivi is a Sanskrit dvandva, or compound word, meaning "heaven and earth". Those two, the divine Heaven and Earth, are the diffusers of happiness on all, encouragers of truth, and also sustain the water (of the rains).

Rigveda 1.184 Aśvinau Sūktam
The Ashvins (lit. 'horse possessors') are also known as Aśvinī Kumaras/Aśvinau. They are described as youthful divine twin gods associated with medicine, health, dawn and the different sciences in the Rigveda.

Rigveda 4.46 Indra-Vāyu Sūktam
Vāyu, the life breath of the world, who are drawn by the Niyuts and have Indra as a charioteer, come for the fulfillment of numerous wishes of human beings.

Rigveda 7.61 Mitra-Varuṇa Sūktam
Varuṇa, has a glorious position in the Rigveda after Indra. In most of the mantras Varuṇa is accompanied by Mitra. Varuṇa destroys our impurities and Mitra purifies our intelligence, so when Mitra and Varuṇa jointly work together they help us to obtain pure intelligence.

Rigveda 7.83 Indra-Varuṇa Sūktam
There Is a combined description of Indra and Varuṇa in nine Sūktas. The IndraVaruṇa, the ruler of the universe, said to have dug the path of the rivers and made the Sun move in the sky. They both together are helpful in the battles and they bestow victory on the worshippers.
